… your best coffee-related experience?
Hit me with your top five(ish): What was it? Where was it? And why was it so awesome?
It could be the greatest shot you ever had, a most amazing filter brew, the coolest café you’ve ever been in, or just the most fun you’ve ever had messing with coffee.
Hmm, coming up with five will require thought, but my #1 is dead easy …
What? La Esmeralda
Where? Dan’s place, must’ve been early January this year.
Why? Borderline synaesthetic experience. He nailed the brew and I could taste rainbows.
I think that Es batch was on New Years Day, or close to. Mixing that Nic Nat with it was killer too.
hmm, I’ll start one off…. besides the above;
What? Mercanta Coffee cupping and hang out
Where? The Source
Why? Top notch coffee, top notch company(as in people).
I’ve got one, for now …
What? Ristretto of Morgan’s Ruby Fire
Where? Coffeebox, Katoomba
Why? It was this shot, the ones that followed and the conversation that flowed on this morning that took me from espresso dabbler to someone with a serious problem.
My top one is a recent one.
What? A pour-over of the Ethiopia Indido Misty Valley.
Where? Coffee Alchemy (of course!)
Why? Sweet and succulent with distinct notes of strawberries and cream.
Adam, Aaron, thanks for commenting!
Hmm … a few more …
What? A Unibuy 3 cup syphon from eBay
Where? Umm it’s in my cupboard
Why? My introduction to the world of brewed coffee, at a time when I was disillusioned with espresso.
What? Syphon-brewed Sidamo (Dale I think)
Where? Mecca
Why? Pinnacle of syphon brewed coffee, thus far. Purple, berry, I can still remember how it tastes.
1. Your place. Wine, cheese (there’s more than 1 type!), piccolo lattes galore, and coffee from wine glasses. I still dream about it. (ok, maybe not actually, but pretty much)
2. Barista course at a local restaurant. Quality wasn’t great (my fault), but awesomely fun.
… can’t make it to 5. But there’s my top 2!
I have another one … it’s kind of all rolled into one memory but has a few parts.
Maling Room - “oh! I totally get espresso” - plus Andrew gave us a bag of Five Senses PNG PSC AA that was pretty much the first “wow oh wow” SO espresso moment for me. I can still remember how it the bag of it smelt the whole 12 hours driving home from Melbourne.
I NEED to go to Melbourne soon!
Oh, and had some of the IMV Adam mentioned when we were in The Cauldron yesterday … so so amazing … definitely got the strawberry and cream bit, and also at one point copped a mouthful of sweet pineapple juice. Simply delicious!!!
Hmm … Okie Dokie;
(1) Espresso at the employee espresso bar at the LM Factory, pulled by Ron Cook on a machine that was essentially the GB5 a few months before it was released, whilst the snow cleared up, revealing a sweeping vista of the tuscan coutryside. Can’t really remember what it tasted like.
(2) Kenyan Mamuto ordered from George Howell last year. The coffee arrived three weeks post roast and was still one of the best coffees that I have every had. A week later, Nim and I talked about it and, funnily enough, we had both turned our espresso machines off for that week in favour of various manual brewing methods.
Cheers,
Luca
